ADVERTISING SALES REPRESENTATIVE

Outlook

Advertising sales are the lifeblood of the media. Except for public stations that have pledge drives, radio and TV stations depend on advertising to pay their expenses. Newspapers can offer the issues at low prices because of advertising, and free papers depend entirely on advertising for their income. The person who can sell air time and newspaper space will always be in demand.

The field of advertising sales will probably grow faster than the average for the next ten years. Many representatives will expand their client base by selling banner ads and Web advertising on the Internet.

Making the Advertising Work

Good newspaper ads need to stand out. A white-on-black format catches the eye. Use a different font than that of the news text, but don't use too many different fonts in one ad. If a business has a logo, use that in the ad so readers will connect with the business. The ad should have one message, and it should explain how the product or service will benefit the customer.

Radio ads must get the listener's attention within three seconds. They can use the voices of local broadcasters or amateurs, which gives the ad a sincere touch. Radio is all sound, so you can use music and sound effects.

Television ads should not confuse the viewer by showing too much. To get a head start, watch TV ads and figure out what you like and don't like about them.
