Acknowledgments

I am honored and privileged to have heard and shared the stories of the individuals profiled in this book.

Thank you to those who have influenced my career in music: Rick Shipp for being the best boss I ever worked for and who I grew to appreciate more long after I was working elsewhere; Evelyn Shriver for helping me get the job as Randy's agent at Lib Hatcher Agency that enabled me to move to Nashville; Alex Cooley for the gift of $200 on my first trip to Nashville; and Bill Bachand, Barbara Hubbard, and Jon Stoll for kindness and plane tickets when I was an agent wannabe; Pat Higdon for teaching me about publishing and introducing me to Shawn Camp; Shawn Camp and Bob Romeo for the opportunity to manage; Barklie Griggs and Art Ford for encouragement and sharing of knowledge that helped me place songs in film and television; Vince Gill, Jann Browne, Foster & Lloyd, McBride & The Ride, and Restless Heart, who I worked for as an agent and spent time with on the road; songwriters Matt Barnes, Jann Browne, Robert Hart, Tommy Lee James, and Wil Nance, who I worked with and signed to publishing deals. To Barbara Orbison for the five wonderful years I worked for you that enabled me to meet many of the people profiled in this book, afforded me the opportunity to travel around the world, expanded my knowledge of the industry, and allowed me to work on extraordinary projects of which I will be forever proud.

Thanks to Pat Hilliard, publisher of Nashville Woman magazine, who allowed me to write “It All Begins With the Song,” an article that profiled Renee Bell, Stephanie Cox, and Stephanie Smith (whom I also thank for their stories), which became the springboard for this book. Thanks to my assistant Debbie Gurney who typed my transcriptions, the Brentwood Library, Center for Popular Music at MTSU.

Special thanks to my agent and friend Deidre Knight of the Knight Agency, who poked and prodded me to write a book about the music industry, and for her continued support and creativity. (You are a gift from God and I treasure you in my life.) Thanks to my editor at Barron's Educational Series, Wendy Sleppin, for her guidance and encouragement in writing this book. Thanks to Darrell Buono, my editor on the second edition. Thanks to Steve Matteo, Barron's Publicity Manager, for his energy and excitement.

Thank you to my family for their love and support: Charles and Luana Peck, Jim and Linda Peck, Dustin Peck, Stacy Peck Norton, Bob and Earlene Crouch, Jody and Stephen Williams, Rob and Georgia Crouch, Julie and David Ashby, Kevin, Dani, Bryan, and Cami Crouch. My son, Cory Crouch, whom I love and am so proud of. I could not have completed this book without my husband, best friend, and love, Kevin, who is a gifted writer and editor, and my first line of defense. Above all, I am grateful for my Heavenly Father and Savior Jesus Christ for making all things possible.
