NATURE PHOTOGRAPHER

Education/training

Professional nature photographer Ruth Hoyt recommends taking a class, even a general adult education course, as a start. “You can learn on your own, but it's good to get going with some instruction for the technical aspects. Although sometimes it's better to make mistakes and find out later why.”

The North American Nature Photography Association sponsors a student scholarship program that is a young photographer's dream come true. Ten high school students are selected annually to attend workshops and trade shows as well as two preliminary days of instructional classes and photo opportunities. Hoyt started participating in the program years ago when she was an aspiring photographer. She says that every year the students put together such a beautiful show that it is just as rewarding for her as it is for them. To be accepted, Hoyt says all you need to demonstrate are a love of nature and a keen interest in nature photography.
