DECKHAND

Education And Training

Most deckhands receive on-the-job training. Experience on boats is the most important requirement for getting hired for many deckhand jobs. Some jobs on cargo ships or cruise ships require the deckhand to be licensed by the U.S. Coast Guard.

There are schools that can train you for a career as a deckhand. You can also take courses sponsored by the U.S. Coast Guard or Canadian Coast Guard. Some companies have their own school and will train you when you are hired.

Another great way to get experience is in the U.S. military. The U.S. Army, Navy, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard have many careers that will prepare you for deckhand jobs. Check the Military Career Guide online for more information (http://www.militarycareers.com/index.html).

To obtain most deckhand jobs, you will need to be healthy and strong for the physically demanding duties. Patience is helpful because days at sea can be long, and there are times when you are not on duty and there is little to do. A deckhand must be flexible enough to step in and do another crew member's job if someone is sick or injured. Being able to work on a team is a very important quality for any deckhand. Crews must work together well so that everyone on board remains safe.
