TAXI DRIVER

Salary

The median wage for a salaried cabbie in 2000 was $8.19 an hour. Depending upon the hours worked and tips earned, a driver could do significantly better than it first appears. Some drivers receive extra money for driving the night shift, and some cities, such as New York, add a surcharge for trips taken after a certain time. City drivers tend to get higher hourly wages than suburban drivers, but it's harder to say which region tips better. It's estimated that the majority of drivers earn between $18,000 and $21,000 per year. Those who own and drive their own vehicle can make upwards of $30,000.
