WEAVER

Profile

Jessica Speer, a weaver from Wisconsin, has set up shop in her home. “I've always woven here at home,” she says. “When I first started, I had the loom, sometimes two looms, in the second bedroom of my apartment. When I bought this house, I remodeled an attached shed into a studio.” Her work tended to take over most of the house.

Her work hours, like those of many weavers, depend upon her projects. She doesn't have a set schedule. “I'm semi-retired now, so I work just a few hours a day,” she explains. “In the beginning, I often worked ten to twelve hours a day, six days a week, and sometimes Sundays, too. The hours for the self-employed are never really regular, and artists work when they get an idea. The whole thing plays havoc with your social and family life.”
