CONSTRUCTION WORKER
Education And Training
Like many of the professions described in this book, construction workers often start their careers as apprentices, studying and learning under a skilled worker. The apprentice learns the job by watching his or her mentor, and in return, he or she is expected to help out with small tasks. Those who start out as assistants to skilled construction workers perform some of the heavy lifting and cleaning up. It's not glamorous, but it is necessary to learn the craft.
An alternative is enrolling in a formal apprenticeship program, which includes on-the-job training and some classroom training. Apprenticeship programs are available through specialty schools and colleges. No matter which route you choose, you'll start slowly, learning how to use simple machinery. You will learn the craft by watching and experiencing the work yourself.
