VETERINARY TECHNICIAN
Outlook
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in 1998 there were 32,000 professional veterinary technicians. They also report that this number is likely to grow in the next ten years, as more and more employment opportunities for vet techs are becoming available.
While most vet techs today work at private veterinary hospitals, in the future there will be more jobs elsewhere. Zoos need vet techs to care for their animals. Universities hire vet techs to teach and to help conduct research. Humane societies and animal control operations need vet techs, too.
How much you make as a veterinary technician depends on where you work, how much experience you have, and what kinds of responsibilities you're given. Expect to earn anywhere from $15,000 when you first start out to $40,000 as you gain more experience.
