Getting started in this business can be disappointing because it takes a long time for a sculptor to build a fan base and sell his or her work on a steady basis. It takes a lot of motivation and determination to get recognized.

It takes years of experience to become a skilled sculptor. If you think you might be interested in becoming a sculptor, you'll want to explore the many materials that can be used to sculpt and determine which you most enjoy working with. There are also many techniques that you can utilize once you've learned them. The longer you practice sculpting as a hobby, the more you'll know about the kinds of sculpting that can be done and the kind that you most prefer doing.

Getting a job in this field requires no formal training, although most art schools offer programs where one can learn to sculpt. Becoming a sculptor is more like a hobby or a passion that you can benefit from financially. If you already know how to sculpt and are considering making it your livelihood, try selling some of your art to a gallery or at a craft fair. Norma “Duffy” Lyon is widely known as a sculptor who made life-sized cow sculptures out of butter! Her other creations have included renditions of Elvis Presley, President Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Garth Brooks. Her work paved the way for other sculptors to try new and different materials to work with.
