CHAPTER
12
MUSIC FOR FILM,
TELEVISION,
ADVERTISING, AND
NEW MEDIA
What would films like
Forrest Gump, The Big Chill, Saturday Night
Fever,or
Star Wars be without music? In the late 1990s,
music became increasingly important
to television, with programs like
Ally McBeal, Felicity, Malcolm in the Middle,
and
Melrose Place featuring music, on-air artist
performances, and issuing sound tracks.
How many theme songs can you sing? Music is
also an intricate part of advertising.
Remember The Gap ad featuring khaki-clad swing
enthusiasts tossing one another
through the air to the sounds of Louis Prima's
"Jump, Jive an' Wail?" This chapter
profiles some of the people who work behind the
scenes of your favorite films, televi-
sion programs, and advertising campaigns, to
ensure there is music to enhance the
picture.
For convenience only, this chapter is divided
into three categories: Creative,
Business Affairs, and Technical. Frequently,
those working in a creative capacity also
perform business affairs functions and vice
versa.
