Salary
The starting salary for a fiber-optic technician is about $18,000 per year. It can rapidly rise to near $40,000, but because the field is in a growth mode, it is hard to predict what salaries will be in five or ten years.
A Trillion Bits a Second?
A trillion bits (units of information) a second is a tremendous pipeline. It's more than all the long-distance traffic that usually flows in the whole American telephone network. It's the equivalent of 10 million voice telephone circuits. A trillion-bit fiber could carry a mind-numbing hundreds of thousands of standard television channels. This is what fiber-optic developers are aiming for.
What else is in the future? Networks that route signals by wavelength, or color. Chicago might be violet, Cincinnati orange, Pittsburgh green. Continents will be color coded, as will nations within continents, and cities within nations. Rainbows of light will spread around the globe faster than anyone can blink.
