LONG-HAUL TRUCK DRIVER

Profile

INTERVIEW WITH TIM JAMES

Tim James has driven trucks all across the United States.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE BEST ABOUT YOUR JOB?

The best thing is seeing different cultures, scenery, and landmarks. I've seen things I probably never would have seen otherwise. I always say that I am not a professional driver, I'm a professional tourist.

ARE THERE THINGS YOU DON'T LIKE ABOUT LONG-HAUL TRUCKING?

The loneliness is difficult. Also, it's not an easy life if you're married and have children. You are away from home a lot and sometimes you miss Christmas, or your children's birthdays, or your wedding anniversary.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR PEOPLE WHO WOULD LIKE TO GET INTO TRUCKING?

You can get your start working for local trucking companies, making deliveries. This gives you good experience with traffic, and you learn how to maneuver your truck in traffic. When you are twenty-three you can get a job with a long-haul company. They will send you to a school to learn how to operate a truck and prepare for the CDL exam.
