ADVENTURE TRAVEL SPECIALIST
Education And Training
Most of the time, official training is not needed to become an adventure guide. The best way to prepare for a career as an adventure travel specialist is to gain experience in the type of adventure you'd like to lead. If you'd like to become a white-water rafting guide, go on a rafting trip as a participant and watch carefully what the guide does. Or get a summer job working as an assistant to an experienced guide.
Another way to get experience is by taking a class at a wilderness or adventure school. There are many schools that offer week- or monthlong classes during the summer. Some schools can even train you to become a guide.
Other skills you'll need as a guide are good people skills and good organizational skills. Take public speaking classes so that you become comfortable in front of groups. Join a scouting group or other groups that will help you to build teamwork and outdoor skills. Take first-aid classes so that you'll be prepared for emergencies that can come up, and work on your outdoor cooking skills—most guides have to cook one or more meals a day!
