TRAVEL AGENT

Education And Training

Most travel agents have taken specialized training courses. Vocational schools, adult education programs, and community colleges often offer six- to twelve-week courses for travel agents. The American Society of Travel Agents also offers a correspondence course, and travel agencies provide on-the-job training.

All travel agents need to know how to use computers. Airline, hotel, and car rental reservations are all made by computer. In addition, fluency in another language will allow you to make unique arrangements.

Travel experience is almost essential for an agent. If you have visited another city, region, or country, you will be enthusiastic about persuading others to go to the same place. Resorts and tour companies sometimes send travel agents to a particular destination so the agent will be able to sell the trip to their clients. Summer work in a hotel or resort is good preparation for the travel industry.

Salary

Starting agents earn about $15,000 per year. With more experience, the salary may go up to $30,000, with agency managers making $33,000. Agents who own their own businesses get income from commissions from airlines, hotels, cruises, and tour operators. They may also charge customers a service fee. Agents get many travel benefits, such as reduced airline rates and discounts on hotels, car rentals, cruises, and tours. Company benefits may include paid vacations and holidays, health insurance, and pensions.
