It is anticipated that openings in the post office will be fewer than in many other industries covered in this book through 2008. However, within the postal service, mail carriers will experience the greatest growth potential. As automated “delivery point sequencing” systems improve, there will be less time required for the carriers to sort the mail themselves. This may mean that carriers will be given longer routes to utilize the extra time they'll have. In turn, this could result in fewer job openings for carriers. As technology and the economy progress, these situations may become clearer.
