Federal records show that there were about 120,000 people working as couriers in 1998. Some 14 percent of messengers worked directly for law firms, another 13 percent worked in the medical profession, and another 13 percent worked for trucking concerns. Financial institutions, such as commercial banks, savings institutions, and credit unions, employed 7 percent. The rest were employed in a variety of other industries, including general delivery services.
